In the early 1980s, a handful of Japanese University students banded together to form Daicon Film, an amateur production group which, amongst other things, produced the landmark opening animations for the the 20th Annual Japan National SF Convention, Daicon IV. By 1985, they had formed the production company Gainax, and for their initial effort, produced Royal Space Force, a film that has repeatedly been pointed to as a work of cultural significance, and a high-water mark for Japanese animation. Since then, they have produced numerous significant and innovative works such as Gunbuster, Otaku no Video, FLCL, Gurren Lagann, and most notably, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Despite all the success and influence, they remain a humble little company nestled in the center of Tokyo, Japan. This panel will discuss their work, history, and how they are a major player and influencer in today's anime industry.
